NEWSLETTER WINTER 2011

The Start of Winter in Mata Ortiz

The village of Mata Ortiz is settling into winter. The grass is turning a white/ brown color, rocks are sharper and the animals go further afield to graze. The dirt roads through the village are bumpier and families are indoors more. Lalo, who takes care of us and owns the Posada de Las Ollas where we stay, has built a bigger fire in the deep fireplace he created and the heat keeps backing us away. When we wake up the next morning, the same fire from the night before is hot. A new helper has proved a wonderful cook and the eggs, cheese and beans- with just a bit of meat-are so tasty when wrapped in her homemade tortillas. Lalos' daughter Anna just had a new baby boy with her husband, Maurico Banuelos the son of Roberto and Angela Banuelos – friends of ours for years. It is a joyous time.

The potters are able to work uninterrupted though a cold room can shake even the steadiest hand. Now there is such great energy as the work on any of the pots proceeds. The younger potters are more influential than before. They push the envelope on color, design and style. We see pots we never thought would be made, great chunks of surface carved away to reveal the architecture of the pot within. After eleven years, we are more in tune with the potters and what their artistry is all about. You see them pull a line across a pot or thread a single hair through a matrix of lines and you wonder, are they controlling the brush or is the brush telling where to go and what to do?

We visit Leonel Lopez to buy more of his magnificent creations. On the way out, Leonel stops us, goes inside his home and comes out with a shirt for David. It is similar to the one admired two visits back. And immediately becomes David's favorite shirt. We have friends everywhere in the village - these friends are definitely one of the things that make each trip so special.

WE WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU!
