NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2012

I Wish I Had Better News

It is with a heavy heart I write this newsletter. David and I have taken over 80 trips to the village of Mata Ortiz and just about every time a friend will tell us to watch out for the roads in Mexico and we'd say the same answer: we've never had problem. But this time we had a problem. We were in a terrible car accident.

I was asleep so I don't know what happened and David doesn't remember. But I do remember waking up and skidding through dried corn stalks. I know we turned over at least once. I know David tried to veer the car back onto the road. I know we fishtailed. David's side of the car was hit worst. I barely had a scratch, but David looks as though he was hit head on. When the car stopped I jumped out to help him. His head was gashed open.

I started screaming and waving trucks down. Decent drivers stopped on both sides. I just sat on the edge of the road and lay back on the pavement and cried. One of the drivers called an ambulance. Then the journey to three different hospitals began. First a clinic in Nuevo Casas Grandes where I was told the head injuries were so extensive another hospital had to take care of him. So in an ambulance again to the nearest hospital in Chihuahua, Chihuahua. It was a 4 hour drive. And I really didn't know if David could hold on that long or whether blood would damage his brain. Finally we arrived at Christus Muguerza hospital where they immediately operated on his brain and skull. I was totally alone. There was no American Consulate or Embassy.

It became apparent we needed to get to the States. Finally I convinced Scripps to air-lift David out of Mexico to San Diego. We arrived at the Trauma Center in Scripps La Jolla. There they discovered injuries to his neck and back. He was in the operating room for 5 hours.

Now we literally do not know what to expect. Please visit our shopping pages and find a pot you love. In the meantime I will keep you updated as I know what happens.
